“Stand On Zanzibar” won the 1969 Hugo award for best science fiction novel of the year.
It’s set in the early 2000’s and got so many of the details right it’s uncanny. Some of the ideas that people in 1969 laughed at were mass homelessness; well paid folks needing room mates to make the rent; random school shootings, etc etc.

Funny story.
A while back someone posed a question online. They wanted to know why all Socialist countries fail? I answered that they don’t; look at Canada. They told me that I was a fool, because the Heritage Foundation had showed that Canada was freer than the USA. I asked why we shouldn’t have Canadian style health care? They never got back to me.

Politicians in this country are totally focused on the next election. Every once in a while you get someone who can see ten or twenty years down the line, but those are the rare exceptions.
Trump is getting votes, and that’s all that counts.

One of the things that corporations learned from the Oil Crisis is that the top executives could keep drawing a big salary even if the plants were off shore. Reagan enshrined the idea that as long as there was some guy in a suit pulling the strings, everything was fine and dandy.
Before Reagan became President, ‘middle class’ was still defined as one job being able to support a family of four. By the time Bush Sr. left office, ‘middle class’ was two incomes to keep the house going. At the same time, $1 million went from being a vast personal fortune to what a rich guy paid for a party.
