Drunken bonfires, chasing lost dogs, trying to be healthier by going for walks. Blaming this soley on believing in bigfoot is a little unreasonable.
FireRetardant@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•2 Oregon men die from exposure in a forest after they went out to look for Sasquatch23·3 months agoThese guys could have also died going on a regular hike, a hunting trip or any other reason to go into the woods. The bigger issue here is they weren’t prepared for the weather conditions they were outside in, that should be the bigger focus on preventing this kind of death in the future. Even if i don’t believe in bigfoot, I could i injure my ankle cross country skiing and still die to hypothermia if I wasn’t prepared.
FireRetardant@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•The Walmart Effect | New research suggests that the company makes the communities it operates in poorer—even taking into account its famous low prices381·4 months agoWastes vasts amounts of urban land on parking instead of housing or more businesses
Is often so deep in parking lots and strip malls its impossible to walk to
Cheap prices and cheap chinese manufacturing to help eliminate local competition
Massive corporation has more bulk buying power than local competition
Designed to be a one stop shop, fix your car, buy a tv and grab some food
Self checkouts pays robots instead of people in the community the store is in
The people who do work there are paid shit wages for life, often not even keeping up with inflation meaning they actually get paid less every year
Probably paying less taxes than they should be for the amount of space the business takes up and the amount of traffic generated
Helps promote car centric design which is a terribly ineffecient and expensive way to move people within an urban area.

And the average car is really an SUV, but yeah the bollards should be able to handle cars and trucks.
FireRetardant@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Driver killed by police after driving truck through central Texas mall, injuring 5121·4 months agoLarge malls or outdoor pedestrian areas need to protected from cars and their drivers. Something as simple and cheap as bollards at every entrance could have prevented the truck from entering the mall.

I don’t need my phone babysitting my ears and the notification doesn’t happen nearly frequently enough to matter anyway. It can be a distraction, especially while driving, i always think i need to pull over to answer a call but nope, just a half assed hearing protection measure.
Does anyone know of any apps or ways to disable the feature on android?

FireRetardant@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Project 2025 chief’s book urges ‘burning’ of FBI, New York Times and Boy Scouts3·5 months agoI could see the blackrock angle as trying to appease the working class. Like “see we hate big wealth too” but then never actually do anything to hurt blackrock.
FireRetardant@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Project 2025 chief’s book urges ‘burning’ of FBI, New York Times and Boy Scouts431·5 months agoThe boy scouts one is especially baffling. A lot of boys become more traditionally “manly” through boy scouts. It is physically active and they typically learn skills like camping, fire starting, wood working. We were also expected to do good deeds, be polite, and overall be decent members of society that help where is needed, such as litter clean ups and tree plantings. I guess the latter half of my point is where their issues start?

Discharged from the military for his conduct, 2 DUIs (thats just when he got caught). How the hell did this guy keep his job as law enforcement after the first DUI? That should pretty much immediately take you off the force. If they can’t be trusted to drive sober and responsibly, how can we trust them as a law enforcement officer? What if they showed up drunk to work as well?
This situation could have been avoided if the police were more critical of themselves as an organization and had stricter rules and regulations for themselves.

About 10 year ago, you could get a new build on half an acre for 350k in my hometown. Today the oldest, run down, needs lots of renovations houses in the city on a quarter acre are going for over 400k. Those 350k new builds are easily into 700-900k range.
My biggest mistake in life was not buying a house fresh out of high school, but i was an “idiot” who looked at housing as a place to live, not an investment.
FireRetardant@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Kids? A Growing Number of Americans Say, ‘No, Thanks.’3·9 months agoYes, i mentioned it requires changes to taxation. A lot of the wealthy are the older so they won’t vote in a way that helps young people, they vote in a way to preserve their wealth, even if it means poor social services for people the same age as them but “poor”.
Would a protest that involves protesters blocking the parade from moving result in an american tiananmen square?
