My first job out of college was back in the days when you bought a newspaper and looked in the classifieds.

I set up a mail merge in word to generate cover letters for hundreds of jobs. Each entry in the database had a single sentence related to the job to make the cover letter look like it was written just for that job.

Years after I was hired, my boss told me that they received hundreds of applicants, but I stood out because I took the time to write a cover letter to go with my resume.

It was an IT job, so I always figured it was less cheating and more a confirmation of my skills.

My mom was telling me about how there are hardly any people left at church.

Apparently they had a split between the progressive and conservative factions of the church, and the progressives all departed.

The progressives tended to be the young families with children. The conservatives tended to be the people who will be dead soon. Like the church.

  • Just throwing this out there in case anyone needs actual advice:

One option is to sign with a buyer’s broker. A real estate agent that works for the buyer rather than the seller. That’s what my wife and I did when we bought our house almost 29.

The real estate fees of 6% are paid by the seller and split by the seller’s broker and the buyers broker, and the buyer’s broker has a fiduciary responsibility to the buyer

Our broker, Gary, made sure we understood everything that was happening and made sure we didn’t screw up.

I definitely recommend it for anyone buying a house for the first time. It doesn’t cost you anything as the buyer, and it doesn’t increase any costs for the seller.

  • I called Verizon FiOS support

Spent 45 minutes waiting while their AI claimed it was fixing the problem.

Called the same number again, said “agent” and got connected to a human being. The human being told me I called the wrong number and that he would try to transfer me to the correct number, but it wasn’t reliable (phone company can’t get phones working), so he told me the number I should have called.

It was the number I called.

I called back again, but this time I managed to get someone helpful who transferred me to someone who understood my problem well enough to tell me there’s nothing they can do and I’m fucked.

Witnessed a radiology resident typing her password into a computer and for each uppercase letter she would press shift-lock, type the letter, then press shift-lock again.

I couldn’t figure it out until my mom pointed out she probably only ever used a phone or tablet.

Which is crazy, because I can’t imagine getting through high school, college, and medical school without ever working on a desktop computer.

  • I worked a job where when one of the team moved on, we’d all pitch in to keep things running while management would work to fill the vacancy. Management would work fast, and we’d fairly quickly get a new person.

When I moved to my next job, I automatically started busting my ass trying to get things done. My new coworkers had to take me aside and point out that there was no help coming. They weren’t going to hire anyone to help, and if I killed myself trying to keep things working, they might not even hire someone to replace me.

After years of us complaining that we needed more people, management decided to bring in a consultant to review our work, evaluate the department, and report on what actions, if any, were necessary. It was fairly clear that management expected the experts to report that we had enough staff.

After interviewing everyone and shadowing us while we worked, they reported that for the size of the organization and the amount of work we were doing, and comparing our staff to staff at similar organizations, we should have had at least twice as many people on our team.

To their credit, this served as a wakeup call to administration. They realized that they needed to take steps to correct the staffing, and also realized how lucky they were to have the staff they had to keep things running. That was over 20 years ago, and things have continued to improve.
