I know what a Scrum Master is; my company doesn’t have them, so their responsibilities are spread across multiple roles. But yeah, my role is higher. I’m not helping the team with processes, I’m working with Directors and VPs on the business side to determine where the product is going. So planning side, not delivery side.
lol, seems like it. Pretty sure you’re just saying it as a clever pun, but in reality I would hate being an actual Scum Master! I’m a Lead Product Manager over four dev teams with a team of 3 PMs. I am trying to focus on longer-term strategy and removing barriers for my team, while the PMs who report to me should be the ones making decisions and doing the individual contributor work.
It’s not uncommon for me to only have one or two 30-minute breaks between 8:30am and 5pm. I’ve gotten to the point that if I have over 2 hours without meetings I often feel like I get nothing done, because I’ve gotten pretty good at getting a few things (emails or messages, not deep work) knocked out in the 5-10 min in between calls. I can only really focus on deeper work at night after everyone else has signed off.
Not really a sustainable way of doing work, I’m also not doing as much hands-on work these days. A lot of my meeting time is 1-on-1s with my team and making sure they have what they need to move forward, make decisions, and get work done or with other people to try to remove barriers to help the team be able to move forward. So in that sense, the meetings ARE the work.
Better resumes are good, but there are plenty of studies showing bias towards the name alone on a resume and that a white-sounding name gets more bites than names more associated with a minority race.
People have biases, conscious or not. Did you know that women’s positions in orchestras increased greatly after switching to blind auditions? And I can’t find a legit source in 2 min of searching, but there’s also been indication that the sound of high heels affects hiring outcomes even in blind auditions.

So yeah, there are a fuckton of steps to addressing systemic racism and starting early in the process is a critical step. But the narrative that an equivalent resume is all that’s needed to close the gap is false and dangerous.

A dear friend of mine went there as well. He was the first trans person I knew, almost 20 years ago now, and I know he loved New College and the support he got through his transition there.

Oh, I may have a book (series) for you! The Alchemist’s Daughter by Theodora Goss. It starts with Mary Jekyll, the daughter of Dr. Jekyll, and expands to find a daughter of Hyde, Sherlock and Watson, Justine—the woman made to be Adam Frankenstein’s bride, and other women left in the path of various men who tested the limits of humanity. It even talks about Shelley’s book and why she might have written it as she did. The second book expands into the wife and daughter of Van Helsing.
I’m about 75% of the way through the second book and have been loving them. They’re very post-modern though, with the characters somewhat frequently interrupting the narrator to discuss the way the story is written. I love that sort of thing but know it’s not for everyone!

I noticed in my late teens I had a lot of freckles on the left side of my body and very few on the right, and I didn’t start driving until I was 22. I did spend 2 years in high school with a much darker tan on my right arm from hanging my arm out the window of a boyfriend’s car with no AC, but still have more left-arm freckles.
I hired a 65-year-old guy last year. I knew he was older, but didn’t know his age until after he joined my team.
It was also a slightly new career path for him. He’d worked as an IT Project Manager for most of his career, focused on backend systems interacting only with other IT folks. Now he’s a Program Manager on a Product team so it’s not wildly different, but his stakeholders are significantly different and the way he works is different (focusing at a higher level than before).
And he is rockin’ it. I love working with him and seeing him grow into this role has brought me a lot of satisfaction. He is a great member of my team. He’s mentioned wanting to retire within 5 years and I’ll be sad when that happens, but I hope I have the chance to be his last manager and support him through when he makes that choice.
I’m not trying to minimize the challenges of changing jobs as you get older; the statistics speak for themselves. But I do hope that if you want that change that this anecdote might help inspire you. There are other hiring managers who will only care about what you can bring to the table.
First off, I totally agree the argument you responded to is bad and that Biden is driving toward the right goal.
However, if we disambiguate the specific circumstance here, there is sometimes an argument to be made that the one being obstructed is the problem. Think about how many obviously illegal laws Republicans have pushed through. A recent example would be DeSantis’ “Stop WOKE” act trying to eliminate DEI training in companies. It so clearly goes against federal law about protected classes and was deemed unconstitutional because of the first amendment. I don’t think there’s any chance DeSantis actually believed this act was legal or would be allowed, he just wanted the brownie points of “hurr durr, own the libs.”
There are so many cases of that kind of thing, and I think it’s absolutely fair to be critical of those whose laws are being obstructed when they initiate them in bad faith.
However, like I said, that doesn’t apply in this situation; this law was not made in bad faith, and the Texas court is definitely the problem here. I only bring it up because “blaming the obstructionism on the one being obstructed” can sometimes be a legit argument.
Yeah, I should have mentioned the price is pretty insane… I’d desensitized myself to it a bit because of the whole buying-Japanese-toothpaste thing wasn’t cheap, and now I just can’t stand not using hydroxyapatite for more than like a week, lol.
I read your comment earlier today and then by chance was going to reorder toothpaste tonight, and I realized the kind of toothpaste I recently fell in love with has a citrus and a grape flavor, so I hunted down your comment to share with you!
The toothpaste has both fluoride and hydroxyapatite, which helps rebuild enamel. Ever since I started using hydroxyapatite, my teeth have that “fresh from the dentist clean” feeling every time I brush them. I was using a Japanese brand of toothpaste for a few years because that’s the only place I found that kind of toothpaste, but it was fluoride free. Just one tube ago I found a brand that has both!
The brand is Carifree, and this is the one I use.

There are components of his theory that ring true, but the cherry-picked examples and the strange conclusions of how points are connected definitely made it read like a conspiracy theorist.
Despite that, one of the points he makes early on is to apologize to those he will hurt with his self-immolation, including witnesses and first responders. That fact alone gives me empathy for him. He truly believed his conclusions, and it drove him to this awful action.
The other thing I’ve recently seen pointed out is that they don’t have doctors administering it. Given the doctor ethos of “do no harm,” they can’t be involved and keep their license. So it’s just a bunch of underqualified people trying to figure out what to do.
