Here's what it shows.5·13 days agoGuessing the same, though to add another element into this that you bring up, private prisons are not included in the data that USA Today obtained. It also doesn’t appear to include any federal prison data either. Just local jails and state prisons.
Stovetop@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•USA TODAY won a lawsuit to get hidden data on prison deaths. Here's what it shows.141·13 days agoJust to pull info from the article in case others don’t care to read, the vast majority of these deaths are still attributed to “natural causes” like illness, old age, or pre-existing conditions, though these are undoubtedly exacerbated by the conditions of prison life.
The point of concern though is that “unnatural causes” are generally on the rise during this period. Unfortunately, given the fact that some of the data is almost 10 years old at this point, it’s hard to say if the situation has gotten any better or worse since then.

Not European, but on my mom’s side, my mom is only an American citizen because she was born in the US, while my grandparents didn’t become naturalized until a little bit after. So that sort of thing terrifies me.

Stovetop@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Trump claims the right to ban 700k federal workers from having union representation11·1 month agoNo, he wants to pull a Reagan part 2 and fire any government worker who goes on strike. Trump has an army of loyalists willing to do whatever he says, who would be more than happy to scab any strike to inefficacy. Even if they’re terrible at the job, all that matters is that they’re loyal.

Stovetop@lemmy.worldto Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Dig this trench to protect your landlord's ability to gouge your decendants.13·1 month agoWeird that it would be coming from Americans given how often US media has depicted the importance of the homefront during the various wars that America has participated in.
Militaries still need food and supplies to operate, so someone has to be making/raising/growing all of that stuff. And those workers need to be paid, accommodated, and kept happy, so every other industry like banking, education, healthcare, entertainment, etc. needs to keep running at full steam to prop up all aspects of the supply chain.

Since they ruled that states cannot make decisions that impact federal elections, it wouldn’t surprise me if the fed can now legally demand voter registration records or else refuse to count those votes.
Thanks, Trump.

Gotta control the narrative however they can.
Yeah Top Gear went to…weird places after the whole kerfuffle.
Ah, of course! What trio could be more iconic?
!Does anyone else hear what sounds like an angry mob of British car enthusiasts outside?!<

Stovetop@lemmy.worldto Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Man, their reputation really has gone to shit0·3 months agoWhen I heard about the targeted moves against the FBI by DOGE, I got to thinking that the FBI is not the sort of organization you want to anger if you have skeletons in your closet. And even if you don’t, they’ll put one there to find.
But I’m worried we’re already at the point where the entire agency can be discredited (not entirely undeservedly) just because President Cheeto and Supreme President Musk could label any findings as “fake news” and the majority of Americans would take it as fact.
They could be the SA to whatever SS the Trump admin wants to replace them with (the Proud Boys?)
Stovetop@lemmy.worldto Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Man, their reputation really has gone to shit1·3 months agoJust to nitpick, the CIA is more the “topple governments” organization.
I am sure the FBI is involved, but their operations are primarily internal affairs. It’s like MI5 and MI6 in the UK.

I don’t think the protest is all that effective either, but it’s better than a boycott.
Stovetop@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Anti-ICE Protesters Block 101 Freeway, Interrupt DASH Service in Downtown LA172·3 months agoBoycotts won’t work, as the ruling class has far more capital to throw around than we do. Blocking freeways interrupts life for normal folks but does serve to make the issue visible and have some degree of impact on local commerce. Ultimately, though, I am starting to think that the most efficient means of resistance is to come up with a few more Luigis, since most other strategies have been rendered ineffective.

Why do I have a feeling the administration would still try to find ways to not pay nonwhite families having kids?
Trump was propped up by people who believe this bogus “Great Replacement” theory and I don’t think they would be willing to back down from that stance on account of a generally declining population.
