  • Look, I’ve been to the states a good 7 or 8 times and I’m really very fond of the place and the people generally. That includes the, hands down, best summer of my life on a college visa.

I will not be going back there until shit calms down. I just can’t gamble on the notion of spending weeks in a cold, overly bright shithole cell on the whim of anyone on the way through just for a holiday when I can spin over to any country in Europe and just get a smile and a “Welcome” from the border security on my way in.

It just wouldn’t be a rational choice.

edit: I just want to add in that the EU pumps an enormous amount of money on the Erasmus scheme. If you’re not in the know the idea is to get kids in college in one country to do a year of the course in another country in Europe. The only real goal of this is to make people realise that they’re just like everyone else in Europe so we never have an internal war again and it is (along with a few other bits) the best money the EU spends IMO.

  • Open casket funerals are kind of weird if you think about it anyway.

They’re the done thing where I live, but only for the wake (night before the funeral mass).

“Ah he looks great” and “Ah sure they did a great job, didn’t they?” etc. always gets trotted out.

It’s kinda nice to see someone for the last time who you may not have seen recently. But I can definitely understand the opposing view (sometimes they look bloody awful). The body is stored the night before either in a funeral home or at the house and you’re not in any way obliged to go into the room with the deceased if it’s not your thing.

Funerals here are done very quickly. Wake would typically be two days following death, mass and burial the following morning. Casket is always closed here at the actual funeral.

In my father’s case we had his body in our home (my mum’s choice) and everyone did their little visit. After everyone had finished and gone we all went to the pub and had pints and told fun stories until all hours. The pub served us well past closing.

My hangover the next day was unholy (pun intended) but it was a great night and a really nice send off.

  • Perfect summary. Harris did a superb job of instantly uniting them under her banner the second it became obvious Biden was fucked. This navel gazing from Pelosi is utter nonsense.

North of 10M voters who turned out for Biden didn’t show up for Harris. She was a great candidate but the democrats message didn’t resonate after the years of inflation.

My eggs are more expensive too. So are everyone elses in the world. I just blame Putin for destabilising and the stores for blatant price gouging the second they felt they could.
