So, I posted a simple Roku fix on Reddit — just explaining how to get actual antenna channels back instead of their ad-stuffed “Live TV” hub.

The post took off fast-within 90 minutes: • 8,000+ views • 12 upvotes • Dozens of people thanking me for the fix

Then… moderators nuked it as a repost.

Sequence of Events: 1. I politely asked what rule I’d broken. 2. Mod replied: “I don’t know, nor is it relevant to your ban.” 3. I joked: “Ok thank you, Paul Blart. 🙄” 4. Instantly → permanent ban + mute.

Screenshots confirmed: no rule violation, just a mod having a day.

Follow-up Attempts: • Tried posting the story in r/help and r/ideasfortheadmins. • AutoMod deleted both — apparently the word “ban” is illegal now. • Tried to share it elsewhere, but at this point Reddit moderation feels like TSA confiscating nail clippers while waving through flamethrowers.

Takeaway: It’s wild when platforms value control over community. I literally helped people watch TV again — and got banned for it.

Give someone a little power, and it goes straight to their head.

The irony? My Roku fix worked. Thousands saw it before it vanished. So somewhere out there, people are happily watching TV — thanks to a guy Reddit decided to erase.

Stay tuned for Volume 2: “AutoMod vs The Word ‘Ban’.”

Your first mistake was going to reddit.

Your second was abstractly talking about the fix here but not saying what it actually is.

Update: No regrets — the fix still works and my sanity remains unbanned. 😂

Stop using ChatGPT to write your posts. If your Roku fix was formatted like this one, I’d pull it off my community too

I used to love Reddit and it was my only social media site for a decade. But it became so Kafka-esque that it was causing me a tremendous amount of stress. Constantly fighting mod bans was akin to tilting at windmills, as it was completely pointless. So I quit cold turkey last year, deleting my account, and found Lemmy a few days later. I still find the content on Reddit incredibly helpful when I’m searching for information and posts come up on Google but I cannot interact with the site/app any longer. The constant deletions and bans are contrary to the original spirit of the site and have reached SNL sketch level.

Post the exact comment that got you banned. I’m sure many on Lemmy would find it fun to repost it to the Roku forum over and over. We don’t care about Reddit bans.

      Here it is:

If you’ve been trying to watch real over-the-air channels and Roku keeps forcing you into their “Live TV” streaming hub (even with Hide Streaming Channels turned on), here’s what finally worked for me:

👉 Step 1: After scanning for channels, go to Manage Channels and add one of your antenna channels to Favorites (for me, it was Channel 5). 👉 Step 2: Back on the Roku home screen, hover over the Live TV tile for 2–3 seconds before pressing OK.

If you wait, Roku automatically loads your first favorite channel — you’ll go straight into antenna TV instead of the streaming hub.

If you click too fast, it jumps right back into the ad-stuffed streaming Live TV interface.

It’s a weird UX quirk, but this workaround actually works every time once you’ve got a favorite set. Hopefully Roku separates those inputs properly someday, but until then… this saved my sanity. 😂

I gave it one more shot after being away for a year. Posting my latest 3D Printer mod (after on Lemmy and the manufacturers forum). Immediately got a snarky garbage commenter. That’s what I get.

I had setup some Lemmy accounts a while back but was procrastinating on settling into them.  Received a 2-week ban for a Rule 1 violation because suggesting that users own their hardware is apparently violent.  Took the opportunity to finally finish setting up in the Fediverse and haven’t opened Reddit since.

I’ve been auto shadowbanned from a technical community, more than once. No idea why. It’d be nice to have a conversation with a mod like that, at least.

It seems others have too. Whenever I go back to check, it’s like all the brainpower has been sucked from the sub.

Sometimes I see an ‘issue’ or ‘help’ post I have an impulse to post exactly what they need, before I realize I can’t… and no one else posts anything helpful.

…Yet sometimes weird, obvious bots reply.

I don’t know what the heck is going on with Reddit, but its amazing its lasted this long.

I was perma banned by admins for hurting a mods feelings. Reddit is so scared of having to pay mods they let them do whatever they want. There is no point in trying to rationalize it. As long as mods go unpaid, they will be allowed to have absolute power in the communities they control.

I told babylonian weeb, the guy who’s taken over animetitties, that spain nuking israel over the freedom flotilla was not a likely, or good outcome. That got me a ban for "glorifying violence:

This is why I don’t use reddit anymore.

I think reddit has lost most of its human users so it’s just NPC’s and bots.

Didn’t mean to spark a sociology thesis — I just got banned for fixing Roku. 😂

Apologies if this isn’t the right forum — it’s my first post and first Lemmy experience.

Here’s the Roku fix for those asking: 1️⃣ Add at least one of your antenna channels to Favorites first. 2️⃣ Then hover over the Live TV tile on your Roku home screen for a few seconds. 3️⃣ It should auto-open straight into your antenna feed (not the ad-stuffed “Live TV” hub). 4️⃣ Do this a few times — it seems to “train” the TV to default back to your real over-the-air channels.

Doesn’t matter whether “Hide Streaming Channels” is on or off — this trick forces it back to antenna mode. ✅ Still works as of 11-1-25.

Side note on the “AI wrote this” comments: I didn’t use ChatGPT to pretend to be smart — I used it the same way we all use spellcheck, Grammarly, or code formatters: to make my thoughts read cleaner instead of rambling.

It’s funny that on a tech platform, of all places, using a tool that helps structure text offends some folks. 😅

The ideas are mine — I just used something to help me say them clearly. Seems like that’s kind of the point of technology, no?

When a post is formatted as if an AI wrote it, it becomes hard to tell if the thoughts are those of the person or the AI. At least with shitty granmar or spelling, one can be reasonably sure that the thoughts of the person are being expressed, which is (IMO) more important than making things look pretty.

That’s fair. But for someone like me who has a hard time being clear and concise GPT or any tool that can render my babbling into a clear coherent statement is helpful. I still have to review , edit , and finalize.
