This article is giving them too much credit, frankly. Saying Republican support dropped from “majority to minority” is misleading, bordering on clickbait.

All that happened was support dropped from 55% to 46%. They were only ever barely a majority.

Saying “Nearly half” or “over half” of all Republicans don’t support gay marriage is splitting hairs. They all support the candidates that are against it.

The real story here is that even support among Democrats and Independents dropped a bit in the last 2 years. Meaning the fear mongering is pervasive enough to affect everyone.

Sure, but she’s also his mother, not a random family member. I’m not going to fault a mother for standing by their child, no matter what he did.

She was also ill, poor, dyslexic, and a single parent dealing with a difficult child. She doesn’t seem to have much in her life but her children, I’m not going to condemn her for not banishing him from her life. It’s not an easy thing for a mother to do.

I can’t imagine having to move state to keep my job, but having to move from California to Florida especially feels like an outrageous demand. On May 2, 2024, at 10:58 a.m., Olympic Division uniformed officers responded to a radio call at an apartment in the 400 block of South Gramercy Place to assist the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (DMH) who were attempting to place an individual, later identified as 40-year-old Yong Yang into custody.

Why was the Department of Mental Health “attempting to place him into custody”? They were trying to detain him and take him from the premises, under the law…which sounds an awful lot like an arrest with a different set of paperwork.

So basically these were just cops without guns…who went ahead and called the cops with the guns anyway.

I said it another comment but where was the emergency here? Why did they need to get him into custody immediately? He could not hurt anyone but themselves locked in an apartment alone. He was showing aggression when people tried to enter, but could not hurt them if they stayed out.

Why did they enter and give him someone to hurt? Seeing as how all that was going to do was give them justification to hurt him.

At the point that they have ordered you to unlock the phone, an investigation has begun, so if you do anything to the data on that phone, it could be considered destroying evidence.

Kind of in the same way that if the cops are searching your home and you try to flush some cocaine, they would consider that destroying evidence. But if you flushed cocaine the moment you saw cops on your street, that wouldn’t count as destroying evidence, because there was no investigation at the time.

If we’re talking about a situation where they can just straight up beat you legally until you give them a passcode, then what’s on your phone likely doesn’t make a difference in the outcome.

And what are the percentage of those cases?

Different models also come with the quick trigger for lockdown so don’t actually have to go into the menu and tap it. You just have to look in the settings under Security to find it, usually.

But realistically speaking, the simplest thing to do with Android is just turn it off. Hold the power button for a few seconds, it shuts down, and when they try to boot it back up it will demand a pin code first.

Fingerprint unlocking is always secondary to there being a pin which is equivalent to a password.

As long as you turn your phone off before approaching/being approached by cops, or before they demand that you unlock it, you’ll be fine. You don’t even have to take it out of your pocket or look at it to turn it off, just hold the power button for a few seconds.

If you’re even more paranoid, enable the setting that requires a PIN code to reactivate the fingerprint unlock after 30 minutes or something.

Or force it to demand the pin after a single failure of the fingerprint unlock and then let your finger kind of slip when they tell you to unlock it.

There are countless ways to mitigate the risks here. You don’t have to forgo fingerprint unlock entirely.

Which is also why both iPhone and Android have panic/lockdown modes.

For my android, if I rapidly tap the fingerprint reader or the power key five times in a row, it locks down and will only be unlocked with a password. I understand iPhones have this same activation method too. Different Android models might have different activations, so you’d have to check the settings.

You can also just hold the power key and shut the phone down, because it’s pretty standard now that upon a reboot you have to put in the pin first before you can use fingerprint.

It’s good news but the true test will be on if those users are retained. It’s possible the uptick is just a case of iPhone users seeing a new screen they’ve never seen before and trying the browsers out of curiosity.

Which would definitely be a good thing. Anything that gets the average user to even consider the wild notion of trying something other than the default would be a monumental improvement to the entire tech market.

But I still think the actual numbers on new active users will probably not be as high. Higher, yes, but not a monumental shift. Anything is an improvement, though.

I think it’s also possible this is more likely to happen in EU countries than the US. It really feels like European users are generally more willing to use alternative things.
