“public domain” sounds naughty, too, though
It’s still a silly question because who would even think SpongeBob would be close to public domain anyway. It’s the lifetime of the creator plus 70 years. Were no where close to this ever happening and the only stuff we are even seeing now are crazy old.
To know enough about copyright to be concerned about it using a character IP in your works but to know so little about it as to think maybe SpongeBob has entered the public domain by now is a very very narrow subsection of people.
